Memorial Day

With our big trip just two days away, Kevin and I wanted to stay close to home for the weekend. Sunday night we drove down to San Clemente to spend the night at the Bank's house. We were planning on going to San Onofre early for Memorial Day. We woke up at 4:00am! Got in line to park by 4:45am. At 6am when the beach opened, there was a HUGE line of cars waiting. Getting up super early really paid off because we got our favorite spot. Fire pit, picnic table, close to the bathrooms and showers!
Hannah and Gavin at 6:00am ready to play in the sand. They literally played in the sand for about two straight hours. Around 8:45 I got Hannah's wetsuit on and we walked to the water and waited for Kevin. Hannah is really getting the hang of surfing.
Gavin was dying to go too. He could not contain his excitement while I put the wetsuit on him. This was his first time out. He looked so little out there.
We are in the middle of potty-training Gavin... Somehow he figured out he could just pee anywhere at the beach. He would drop his shorts to his ankles and fire away. I was so embarrassed. Kevin taught him to pee on the plant. Stinkin' little boys.
More playing....

And a bonfire to cook our food!
Around 2:00pm, Kevin was out for his 3rd session and the kids were cranky. I made a "beach bed" and laid down with them. In about 5 minutes they were both totally out. They slept there until 4:00 when it was time to go.

They got a drink of water and a snack in the car and went back to sleep until we got home at 6:00.
Felt good to take a shower and get our PJ's on, we are going to bed early!

"I Declaire"

My mom took Hannah and Gavin on Thursday, which gave Kevin and I an opportunity to have a "kid free" weekend. Kevin's friend, Steve, invited us down to his in-law's boat in Mission Bay. We spent Friday wake boarding, spent the night on the "big boat" and then went out again Saturday morning.
Kevin tried wake boarding, but the foot thingies were too small for his feet.I taped up my toe really well and went out on the inner-tube. It was so much fun!
We had a great time with Steve and Kaitlin.
And their friends Mark and C/KatherineAfter lunch at Costco, we went surfing at Doheny. I tandem surfed with Kevin again, I love it!
Kevin and Steve had a good time surfing together.
Since it was Mark's birthday, we went to Claim Jumper
because, according to Mark, they have the best desserts. I think he's right.
Exhibit A:
"I Declaire"
Vanilla icecream serves at the foundations for an oversized pastry filled with butter custard cream, topped with hot fudge and whipped cream. I suffered from a major sugar high.

Kevin and I were exhausted. Thank you mom for taking the kids and giving us a random, unexpected vacation.

Chum in the Water

Kevin is back into surfing! We drove down to San Clemente to meet up with his old surfing buddy, Steve Banks. I took my official post on the beach watching the kids. When Kevin was done surfing, he took Hannah out. When he put her on his back and started to paddle out, I got a bit nervous. I knew he was going to catch a wave with her. I wish I could have captured their faces better, I wish I could record the sound of her giggling and screaming as they came in. It is a memory I will never forget. Hannah is hooked.Gavin didn't want to miss out on the fun. He's not big enough to do what Hannah did, but he was satisfied laying on the board and letting the water hit him in the face. I am proud of my "Rachel Quality" picture.
Steve and his wife have a tandem board and love to tandem surf. They said Kevin and I could try and they would watch the kids. I was a bit nervous going into the water as always, but even more so since Shark Week just ended.
San Onofre's beach is covered with rocks, on my way out I sliced my toe. I didn't realize how bad it was until I got on the tandem board with Kevin and he saw my bloody big toe. He said, "Uhh, your toe is pretty bloddy... why don't you take it out of the water?"
Ok, that just totally freaked me out... then Steve's friend came by and said, "Chum in the water?" I thought he was referring to the fact it was my first time tandem surfing. No, he was referring to chum, the stuff you throw in the water to attract a shark!!!!
Kevin and I did catch one wave, it was amazing... I can't wait to go again. All the things I don't like about surfing aren't a concern on a tandem board. I totally trust Kevin and his surfing ability, he knows how to do everything and I can just mooch a ride off of him. I can't wait to go again.
I had to walk back to the beach in the water, Kevin said, "walk lightly!" I was totally freaked out about attracting a shark.
I made it! The life guard bandaged my toe up.

Steve and Kevin brought in the giant pink tandem board.
When we got home Kevin cleaned my toe and got it to stop bleeding. He bandaged it up nicely as well. I was shocked that he could handle the sight of my blood, well, any blood for that matter. From passing out at the sight of blood, to touching my bloody toe, Kevin has come a long way.
